Stevenson Consulting provided all concrete testing for main bascule span. The work involved two-man testing crews (one on land, one on the barge where concrete placement occurs). Stevenson Consulting provided off-hours tests for mass concrete pours as well as specialty tests for shrinkage modules of elasticity and creep on lightweight bridge deck concrete.
On the Maryland approach, Stevenson Consulting provided concrete testing, precast inspection and ACI cold weather monitoring. On the Virginia approach, Stevenson Consulting provided manufacturer quality control testing for onsite pre-cast fabricated bridge bascule piers, concrete testing, including early break testing for formwork removal, which was vital to the critical path. All cylinder breaks were done in an on-site concrete strength testing facility. This was the largest bridge project on the East Coast at the time.
