This environmentally-sensitive replacement bridge for Virginia Route 175 connects the mainland to Chincoteague Island. The bridge coversĀ 4,035 feet of mainline and provides access to Marsh Island with a 729-foot secondary connector bridge. Construction comprised a 2-lane, 43-foot-4-inch wide bridge with 80-foot precast concrete girder spans on top of precast concrete cylinder piles and caps. Containing two 123-foot-6-inch steel bascule girders, 10 feet, 7 inches deep, the 92-foot, single-leaf trunnion bascule spans the navigational channel. At 208 tons of structural steel in the bascule span, Stevenson Consulting’s role in inspecting the structural steel was integral to the project.

Stevenson Consulting performed Dynamic Pile Analysis (PDA) testing and installed geotechnical instrumentation to monitor foundation construction. Also, provided a comprehensive quality control testing and inspection program in accordance with VDOT specifications and including soil, concrete, asphalt, and steel inspections.
