For the U.S. Institute of Peace to proceed with foundation work, the site required 95,000 cubic yards of excavation, 65,000 cubic yards of which were rock. The excavation support system required a 24‐ to 54-foot vertical cut with 134 soldier beams, 40 driven and 94 drilled; 22,000 sf of lagging; 13,000 sf of shotcrete; 271 drilled tiebacks; and 770 drilled rock bolts.
This building was LEED certified. It used recycled materials, eliminated odorous building materials, and maximized day lighting and landscape to conserve water.
