With the last upgrade to Terminal 1 in 1991 and serving the Raleigh-Durham International since 1981, it was in need of major renovations. Stevenson Consulting assisted in the upgrades. The arrival sequence received a new canopy system extending the length of the building and covering the crosswalk. Existing metal panels and the curtain wall on the landside of the terminal were removed. In their place, a combination of metal panels, translucent fiberglass and glass curtain wall were erected. The airside façade was completely rebuilt with a combination of metal panels and curtain wall. New starts, escalators, four new passenger elevators, now finishes, lighting furnishings and signage were all installed.
